Any chance that Anthony Davis had to make the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team likely went out the window this weekend.

Davis, the top pick in the NBA draft last week by the New Orleans Hornets, sustained a severe ankle sprain in a workout Saturday, Yahoo Sports reported Monday.

He had been invited by several players to participate in workouts for the U.S. team before its training camp this month, but league sources told Yahoo Sports that the Hornets wouldn’t want to risk further injury for their future star by allowing him to play in the London Games.

The 6-foot-11 Davis was considered a contender to make the team because a rash of injuries has sidelined NBA standouts Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade.

Davis left Kentucky after being named a first-team All-America and helping the Wildcats win the national championship as a freshman.
