The Denver Broncos have signed free agent cornerback Marquice Cole, who was on and off the New England roster this season, the team announced Tuesday as it prepares to face the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.
The Broncos also signed practice squad tackle Vinston Painter to their active roster and placed cornerback Chris Harris Jr. and defensive end Derek Wolfe on injured reserve.
Cole (5-10, 195 pounds) is a fifth-year player who has seen action in 64 regular-season games with the New York Jets (2009-11) and New England (2012-13), totaling 36 tackles, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries in addition to 51 special-teams stops.
Signed by the Oakland Raiders as a college free agent in 2007 from Northwestern University, Cole spent his first two NFL seasons competing on the practice squads with the Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints. He signed with the Jets in 2009 and went on to play in 37 regular-season games and six playoff contests for the club over the next three years.
Cole was as an unrestricted free-agent acquisition by the Patriots in 2012 and participated in 27 games (1 start) over the last two seasons before being released on Dec. 26.
Painter is a rookie who spent the entire season competing on the club's practice squad after being selected in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft from Virginia Tech.
Harris Jr. was officially placed on injured reserve following the news that he tore his ACL in Denver's divisional-round win against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. He ranked fourth on the team with 65 tackles and tied for the club lead with three interceptions, while ranking second with 13 pass breakups during the regular season.
Wolfe has been inactive since suffering seizure-like symptoms prior to the Broncos' trip to Kansas City in Week 13. He totaled 16 tackles with four sacks and one fumble recovery in 11 games this year.
