EL PASO, Texas -

Fans of the "The Hobbit" will have to go on an adventure of their own if they want to see the sequel on an Imax screen.

El Paso's first Imax theater opened last month with the highly anticipated "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

It was only natural that movie fans would expect the next big movie - "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" - also would be shown on the five-story, 70-foot wide Imax screen at Bassett Place.

But that's not going to happen.

"Hey Loyal Premiere IMAX fans . . . we apologize 'Hobbit-Desolation of Smaug' is not showing in El Paso’s fabulous new IMAX theatre, this is a studio decision, not ours, they currently split movies up between Bassett and Cielo Vista much to your understandable dismay! Premiere believes you should be able to see your movie at the theatre of your choice in the format of your choice and we’ll continue working to try to convince studios of the importance of offering their movies in all formats within the market, including IMAX and DBOX which are only available at Premiere. We appreciate you and your patience," Premiere Cinemas management posted on their El Paso Facebook page on Dec. 10. Premiere Cinemas operates the Imax theater in El Paso.

The "Cielo Vista" Premiere is referring to in the statement is Cinemark's Cielo Vista Mall location.

Premiere Cinemas and Cinemark have tangled before.

In 2007, Premiere Cinemas filed a federal lawsuit against Cinemark alleging Cinemark was violating anti-trust law by keeping some of the biggest films from being distributed fairly in the El Paso region. The lawsuit was dropped without a resolution.

Hobbit fans who want to see the film on Imax won't have to travel to Albuquerque or Lubbock to see it, though.

They'll just have to drive across the border to watch it at the Imax theater at the Cinepolis Las Misiones in Ciudad Juarez.

A Cinepolis employee told ABC-7 the Hobbit film will open in their Imax theater in 3-D on Saturday, Dec. 14.
