Aug. 22, 2013 Update: Las Cruces Police have arrested a 27-year-old man in the fatal stabbing of his 30-year-old friend Wednesday night.
Israel Torrez has been charged with an open count of murder, resisting or obstructing an officer, and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. He is accused of stealing his friend’s car.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, Las Cruces Police were called to the report of an altercation and stabbing on the 2200 block of Rosedale Drive. Officers arrived and found a 30-year-old man on the sidewalk, suffering from multiple stab wounds to his torso, neck and arms.
The victim was identified as Ramon Robledo, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say that Torrez and Robledo were friends but got into a fight inside a vehicle where the stabbings occurred. Residents of the 2200 block of Rosedale Drive told investigators that they called 911 after hearing screams for help and finding Robledo on the sidewalk.
Torrez was arrested after a black Buick Rainier was seen tailgating another vehicle. Officers stopped the Rainier driven by Torrez on the 1300 block of north Mesquite Street.
Torrez and the front seats of the Rainier covered in blood. Detectives are continuing their investigation and will execute a search warrant in an attempt to recover the weapon used in this crime.
Torrez was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $1 million.
Previous Story: Las Cruces police are investigating a stabbing that left a man dead and are still looking for the person responsible.
A spokesman for the police department told ABC-7 it happened around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday near the 2200 block of Rosedale Dr.
The victim died at the scene after efforts by emergency crews to save him were unsuccessful.
Investigators say they are not sure the man lived in the area and believe this is an isolated incident.
People ABC-7 spoke with at the scene said it is an older area of town made up of mostly retirees. Neighbors also said the area is quiet and crime is very rare.
One of the neighbors -- who did not want to be identified -- says knowing someone was killed near her home has her worried:
“Just nervous because we do know most of the people in the neighborhood so of course we're concerned for their safety,” she said.
Police taped off the neighborhood for several hours overnight.
Several neighbors could be seen watching from a distance -- concerned the victim was someone they knew.
