Actor Sherman Hemsley died of lung cancer, according to an El Paso Medical Examiner's report obtained by ABC-7.
The medical examiner's report states, "It is the opinion of this examiner that this man died from a superior vena cava syndrome as a result of a lung mass. A review of medical records indicates that he was advised to have chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Subsequently he developed a superior vena cava syndrome. The manner of death is natural."
The document is signed by Dr. Juan Contin, the then-interim medical examiner. Read the full document by downloading it under the related content section of this story.
An autopsy was not performed.
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), superior vena cava syndrome is a group of symptoms that occur when the superior vena cava is partly blocked. The superior vena cava is a major vein that leads to the heart.
"Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is usually caused by cancer. In adults, SVCS is most common in the following types of cancer: Lung cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma," according to the NCI website.
Hemsley, 74, was found dead on July 24 in his East El Paso home. He had lived in El Paso for more than 10 years.
