2nd case of West Nile infection confirmed in El Paso this year

How bad is it this year? The U.S. is experiencing its biggest spike in West Nile since 2004, with 241 cases reported so far this year. Twenty-six people have died.

EL PASO, Texas -

The City’s Public Health Department has confirmed its second case of West Nile.

The department announced Wednesday that an elderly man has tested positive for the virus.

The man lives in the 79907 area code in the Lower Valley.

He is said to be recovering at home.

The first case of West Nile was reported last week in the 79915 zip code.

You can reduce the risk of West Nile by following the four “D’s”

  • DEET- Use insect repellant whenever outdoors.
  • Dress- Wear long sleeves and pants when weather permits.
  • Dusk and Dawn- Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours.
  • Drain- Help reduce the number of mosquitoes by emptying standing water around the house.
