ABC-7s Matthew Smith reports

EL PASO, Texas -

Police are investigating a single-car crash in northeast El Paso that killed one person.

According to investigators, the driver of a small SUV was thrown from his vehicle.  There was a second person inside the vehicle who was also thrown from the vehicle and injured -- police said he was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

Northbound U.S. 54 lanes were shutdown from Mesquitte Hills to Stan Roberts.  Police expected that shutdown to remain in effect for several hours.

The crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m.  An officer in northeast El Paso told ABC-7 that it appeared the vehicle went off the road and flipped multiple times.

Names of the victims have not been released.  Police are still working to notify family members.
