A teenager celebrated his birthday for the first time late last year after spending the first 18 years of his life not knowing when he was born.

19-year-old Noah Boyce of Michigan was sent out on his own after his family was evicted from their home because his father refused to pay property taxes, reports MLive.com. The eviction left Noah to fend for himself without a birth certificate, a Social Security number and no formal education of any kind. His father had repudiated his citizenship in 1996 and believes government should follow God’s law.

A Good Samaritan from the church took Noah in and he and others helped Noah establish the documents he needed to prove who he was and find out his actual birthday, which is Dec. 10, 1993.
