What causes prostatitis?

Prostatitis is the swelling and inflammation of the prostate gland, according to the Mayo Clinic.

 

Prostatitis can make urination difficult or painful. The Mayo Clinic states it can also include pain in the groin, genital and pelvic area.

 

According to the Mayo Clinic, prostatitis can be caused by many different things. One cause could be a bacterial infection. The hospital states sometimes the cause might not be known at all.

 

Prostatitis can sometimes get better on its own, or it may require treatment, the Mayo Clinic states.
