Does the thought of “cleansing” or “detoxing” make your stomach grumble? Or maybe you’ve tried a juice cleanse before and loved the new skinny you, but the moment you took a bite of real food, you packed on the pounds again.
Believe it or not, eliminating toxins from your body, kick-starting a healthy lifestyle change, clearing up problematic skin, improving digestion, or just feeling more energized doesn’t have to (and shouldn’t) be based on starvation. In fact, the right foods can be your best medicine.
Certified health coach Rebecca Sadek is co-founder of Urban Detox Club, a food-based detox program that promotes healthy eating habits for long term. “Most of the popular cleanses on the market right now are liquid-based and can be extremely restrictive,” says Rebecca. “We have created a program where you can detox your system and still chew. If you’re not sure if you should try a detox, this handy list breaks down some of the symptoms that might garner a whole body reset. During any detox, you’ll eliminate inflammation-causing foods from your diet. This might include dairy, animal protein, caffeine, alcohol, sugar, wheat and processed foods. So you’ll be eating cardboard for two weeks instead, right? Think again. “There are so many delicious foods that you can eat while detoxing, but my top three are probably kale, quinoa and avocado,” Sadek says. Detox-friendly meals will take a little extra creativity (and chopping skills) compared to nuking a Lean Cuisine, but your body will thank you for the clean fuel you’re giving it. And don’t underestimate the versatility, texture and tastiness of clean, wholesome foods! Guacamole, strawberry-banana smoothies and even sweet potato fries and dark chocolate (seriously!) are excellent choices for clean eats.
