Matthew Smith is a reporter and co-anchor for ABC-7 Good Morning El Paso Weekends. He joined KVIA in October of 2011.
Matt grew up in the Midwest, but comes to El Paso from Beckley, W. Va. That's where Matt spent two years anchoring weekend newscasts and reporting the news for WVNS-TV. While in West Virginia, Matt covered numerous stories including the movement of gangs from larger cities, a military helicopter crashing in the mountains, and the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster where 29 men died in an underground explosion.
Working in El Paso is the first chance for Matt to experience the Southwest. He's thrilled to be far away from the cold Michigan winters he grew up with instead enjoying everything the Borderland has to offer.
Matt was born and raised in Michigan where he attended college at Grand Valley State University and the University of Michigan-Flint for Communications.
Before coming to El Paso, Matt previously worked in both Flint, Mich., and Beckley, W. Va., on-air and behind the scenes in various capacities.
