Do ovarian cysts affect fertility?

Does the occurrence of an ovarian cyst affect a female’s chances of becoming pregnant? According to the Mayo Clinic, certain types of cysts can affect a woman’s fertility.

The Mayo Clinic states that two types of cysts are most likely to affect chances of pregnancy. Those include endometriomas and cysts resulting from polycystic ovaries.

Endometriomas are cysts caused by endometriosis, which is a condition where the tissue that is meant to line your uterus grows on the outside of the uterus, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is when a female suffers from many, small cysts on her ovaries and may also suffer from irregular periods and high levels of certain hormones, the Mayo Clinic states.

There are also some types of cysts that shouldn’t impact a woman’s ability to get pregnant.

According to the Mayo Clinic, functional cysts (cysts that form during a normal menstrual cycle), cystadenomas (growths in the ovaries) and dermoid cysts (cysts that contain tissue instead of fluids) should not affect a woman’s fertility.
