Multimedia journalist reporter Pilar Arias joined the ABC-7 team December 2013.
Born and raised in Mesa, Ariz., she graduated from Westwood High School in 2006. After high school she started college at Northern Arizona University as a pre-med student who wanted to be an optometrist. Once she took precalculus and chemistry, Pilar decided to pursue another career path. She changed her major to journalism and transferred to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University spring 2008. There, Pilar participated in the award-winning live student produced show Cronkite Newswatch as a floor director, web coordinator and multimedia journalist. She also interned at KPHO CBS 5 News and Gilbert Hospital.
Pilar received her Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in women's studies fall 2010. She's worked every type of job in the industry you can imagine. One of the first was as a photographer/studio crew member for the nationally syndicated show Right This Minute. There was a one year multimedia journalist reporter position in Beaumont, Texas, and then Pilar went home to Phoenix to work for Independent Newsmedia Inc., a company that publishes hyperlocal newspapers, and 92.3 FM KTAR News Radio as an anchor/reporter.
After realizing Pilar missed working in television news so much, she moved to work for KOLD/KMSB-TV in Tucson, Ariz., as a web producer and assignment desk editor. She continued to pursue her dream to be an on-air reporter again when she was asked to work for KVIA. So far, Pilar is enjoying the Sun City. On her free time she likes to hike, play tennis, watch movies and shop.
